Interested in Strongman and competing?

If you are interested in Strongman there are many avenues you can go down. From training in a gym with odd objects, finding a group local to you, or signing up for a show as a novice or in the open class.

1) Training in a gym: Some strongman events can be easily trained in a gym at the most basic level. A deadlift, overhead press, or some moving events can be incorporated with other programs and at most gyms. For some of the more specific lifts a strongman gym may be needed. Sandbags, farmers, and different overhead implements are often expensive and hard to procure so a gym may be a better idea than buying your own equipment right away. A helpful page on Instagram is "Strongman Institute" which has a gym finder in its bio. This will allow you to find strongman gyms close by.

2) Finding a group: Facebook is a great resource for finding a group of like-minded lifters. Groups like "NC Strongman" "Starting Strongman" or "Strongman Community & DIY" are great resources. Often times you can find a group that may not train at a gym and usually do something like a Strongman Saturday at their garage.

3) Signing up for a comp: While there are two large federations for Strongman in North Carolina, there are some smaller federations and even unsanctioned competitions. IronPodium.com is a great source to find shows! The site hosts a lot of competitions and can provide you with the point of contact for each show. While this is not the only way it is usually the easiest way.

Regardless of how you start, its a fun journey and don't be afraid to ask people questions.
